On the street off mine, there used to be a fushnchup shop, a dairy and a butcher. Supermarket strategies and population put paid to that over the years and it's probably a Good Thing (tm) that there isn't a shark'n'tatie shop too close to where I live.
However, I have occasionally lamented that the closest dairy is a 45 minute (return) walk away, which isn't what a gal needs when all a gal wants is the Saturday paper (not so much of an issue now I have a car, granted).
Although I'm a certified geekette and read the news on the web, via phone, laptop and desktop, I occasionally want to go old school and read the paper. Usually on Saturdays or Sundays. Not being a huge fan of Auckland, the Herald's out, so that leaves the Dominion's Weekend paper on Saturday. For the longest time, to get the Saturday paper delivered, you had to sub for the entire week. That never appealed.
Now you can just get the Saturday one. (Although they don't tell you that on their Dominion Post subscription page, I found out by word of mouth.)
My first one came today in it's little baggie, that though plastic, keeps the rain and cat wee off, and I could wander up the path in my dressing gown and back down to my coffee.
This pleases me.
